Bassey Will Come Good At Ajax – Schreuder

Published on: 17 August 2022

Manager of Dutch champions Alfred Schreuder is confident Calvin Bassey will do well at the club following his recent move from Glasgow Rangers, Nigeriasoccernet.com can report.

Bassey came under fire after getting sent off on his first appearance for the Eredivisie champions in the Johan Cruyff Shield against rivals, PSV Eindhoven.

The action resulted into a two-match ban for the centre-back in the club’s opening two games of the new campaign.

And with the suspension completed, the 22-year-old is set to make his Eredivisie bow against Sparta Rotterdam this weekend.

Schreuder has been miffed by criticism of the Nigeria international in the Netherlands.

“Anyone who knows anything about football and who watched him at Rangers last season should know what his qualities are. If people don’t know that, it’s not my problem. Calvin is just a really good player. He is very good at defending one-on-one and is also very quick,” Schreuder was quoted by the Daily Record.

“Yes, there are some things that could be improved but he is working on that and he was also working on that with Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

“Gio considers good football to be of paramount importance and it says a lot because that’s why he put him into the centre of his defence last season.

“He’s a guy with a huge drive who wants to achieve something and I think he will be an excellent purchase.”
