Barnsley midfielder Kelechi Nwakali sent off in U21 match for punching opponent

Published on: 06 November 2024

Kelechi Nwakali’s career has once again hit a setback following his red card in a U21 match for Barnsley against Birmingham City Academy, Nigeriasoccernet.com can report.

The 25-year-old Nigerian midfielder, who had already been booked earlier in the game, was sent off after an altercation in the 78th minute where he threw a punch at an opponent. The match ended 2-2, but Nwakali’s disciplinary issues continue to overshadow his career.

Since his summer move to Barnsley, Nwakali has struggled for first-team opportunities, featuring in just two matches and providing one assist. Barnsley had sent him to the U21 team to regain match fitness, but this latest incident has raised questions about his professionalism.

This isn't the first time Nwakali has faced disciplinary problems. In 2022, he was dismissed by Spanish club SD Huesca, who cited “disciplinary issues” as the reason for his release. Nwakali later claimed the club’s decision was due to his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations against their wishes.

His time in Portugal with CD Chaves also ended on a sour note. After a poor performance against Famalicão, Nwakali was substituted at halftime, but his behavior was further criticized when he was seen using his phone on the bench during the match, which coincided with Chaves' relegation to the second division.

Once seen as a rising star, Nwakali’s future now looks uncertain. After captaining Nigeria to victory at the 2015 U-17 World Cup and winning the Golden Ball Award, expectations were high for his development. However, his off-field controversies have cast a long shadow over his once-promising career.

Barnsley had hoped that Nwakali’s time with the U21 team would help him refocus, but his most recent actions could lead to further disciplinary measures, leaving fans to wonder if he can ever fulfill the potential he once showed.
