Barcelona may renew their interest in Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol if the Premier League club are punished over their financial charges.
The Premier League have found Manchester City guilty of all 115 allegations relating to breaches of the competition’s internal financial regulations between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. Manchester City deny the charges and intend to appeal against the findings.
If the allegations are upheld, the club could face substantial financial penalties, a transfer ban and possible relegation from the English top flight. Such sanctions could make it more difficult for Manchester City to retain their squad and could prompt interest from rival clubs at home and in Europe.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are among the clubs monitoring the situation and could return to their interest in Gvardiol. The Croatia defender was previously identified as a potential target by the Catalan club.
Barcelona reportedly contacted Manchester City about a possible offer in 2025. However, the approach was rejected and Gvardiol subsequently agreed a contract extension that runs until 2031.
That new agreement also included a pay rise for the defender. The improved terms would make a deal more difficult for Barcelona, whose finances are already under pressure.
However, Mundo Deportivo reports that a lower exit value could change the situation and allow the LaLiga champions to make another proposal for Gvardiol.
Any change in Manchester City’s circumstances could therefore have an impact on Barcelona’s chances of completing a deal. For now, Gvardiol remains tied to the club until 2031, while Manchester City continue to deny the financial allegations and prepare to appeal.
