Awoniyi sets to battle Wood for top spot

Taiwo Awoniyi has opened up about his journey back to full fitness following a challenging period of injuries that have affected his role at Nottingham Forest, Nigeriasoccernet.com writes.

The striker, who is now competing with Chris Wood for the starting position, is focused on overcoming these setbacks and reclaiming his spot in the first team.

Awoniyi, 27, had to undergo surgery to resolve a long-standing groin issue, and his recovery was further complicated by a thigh injury that caused him to miss substantial playing time last season. In addition to these issues, personal reasons led him to miss a significant part of the pre-season.

Since returning, Awoniyi has featured as a substitute in Nottingham Forest's first three matches of the season. His efforts are aimed at regaining the fitness levels he enjoyed before his injury problems. On the international front, Awoniyi played briefly against Rwanda and was on the bench for Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over Benin, allowing him to rest and recover.

Reflecting on his return, Awoniyi said, "It feels great to be back. After a period away due to injury, returning to play is what every footballer hopes for. I'm really happy to be back on the field."  He also spoke candidly about the difficulties of dealing with injuries, emphasizing the importance of resilience and maintaining fitness.

Regarding his goals for the season, Awoniyi chose to keep specifics private, stating, “Every player has what they are looking forward to and that goes for me as well. I will keep going as it comes and I work very hard. With the injury I have suffered in the last couple of months, I just have to focus on my fitness and the goals will start coming again.”

Awoniyi will hope to get some minutes to his name as Nottingham Forest visits his boyhood club Liverpool on Saturday in the 2024/25 matchday 4 Premier League season.
