German top-flight side Augsburg have taken a £17.5m risk by deciding to play Chelsea target Baba Abdul-Rahman in their Cup match third division Elversberg later this evening.

The 22-year-old is being courted by English giants Chelsea who have tabled £17.5m to sign the right-back from Augsburg but the German side are proving difficult in negotiations.

The Germans are angling for more money in the transfer of the Ghanaian youngster seeking to improve the amount tabled by the Premier league champions.

Augsburg have decided to play Baba in tonight's match against third division side Augsburg in their opening German FA Cup match at 2000 local time.

For Augsburg the £17.5m offer is a mega sum and an injury for Baba against Elversberg tonight will scupper his defender's proposed move to Chelsea.

Yet Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl says: 'Baba will play in the match against Elversberg'.

The 22-year-old produced some fine displays with Augsburg, helping them finish fifth in the Bundesliga last season.

The Ghanaian made 31 appearances with Augsburg last term.

He was a key part of Ghana's Africa Cup of Nations squad that reach the final only to be beaten Ivory Coast on penalties.
