Augsburg came from behind to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 away on Sunday, leaving Raphael Onyedika and his team-mates with only one point from their opening two Bundesliga matches.

Nigeria international midfielder Onyedika played the full 90 minutes for Frankfurt, making his second league appearance since moving from Club Brugge during the summer transfer window.

The result marked Augsburg’s second victory of the season and lifted them to six points at the top of the Bundesliga table. Frankfurt, who drew 3-3 with Union Berlin on the opening matchday, remain in the lower half of the standings with one point.

Frankfurt made the stronger start at Deutsche Bank Park and took the lead in the sixth minute. Jonathan Burkardt rose to head the hosts in front after an encouraging opening spell.

The home side controlled much of the first half, enjoying greater possession and creating more attempts than their opponents. However, Frankfurt were unable to turn their dominance into a second goal, with several opportunities going unconverted.

Augsburg responded immediately after the interval. Just one minute into the second half, Arijon Ibrahimovic levelled the contest with a header.

The visitors then completed their turnaround moments later when Robin Fellhauer put Augsburg ahead. His effort appeared relatively harmless, but Frankfurt goalkeeper Noah Atubolu spilled the ball and allowed it to find the net.

Frankfurt were unable to recover as Augsburg grew in confidence. Substitute Alexis Claude-Maurice extended the visitors’ advantage in the 65th minute, placing the game firmly beyond the hosts’ reach.

Fabian Rieder completed the scoring in the 89th minute with an excellent free-kick, confirming a convincing away victory for Augsburg.

Onyedika’s appearance was his second in the Bundesliga since his transfer from Club Brugge, where he had previously played. The Nigerian midfielder remained on the pitch throughout the match as Frankfurt suffered a heavy home loss.

Augsburg forward Uchenna Ogundu, also a Nigerian, was named among the substitutes but did not start the match. He was again left on the bench as Augsburg secured a result that moved them to the summit.

Frankfurt’s next challenge will be to respond after surrendering an early lead and conceding four times in the second half. Their opening two matches have now produced a draw and a defeat, while Augsburg have taken maximum points from both of their fixtures.
