The weekend’s action in Europe’s domestic leagues saw several African players produce decisive performances, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang providing two assists, while Assane Diao and Mohamed Belloumi both scored twice for their clubs.
Senegalese forward Diao helped Como maintain their unbeaten start to the season with both goals in a 4-1 victory over Genoa. His contribution came in a convincing win that allowed Como to continue without defeat.
In England, Belloumi’s double earned Hull City a point in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Algeria international scored twice within six minutes as Hull recovered from a difficult position.
Although Hull were unable to claim victory, the result kept them third in the Premier League.
Aubameyang was also central to a comeback in Spain as Deportivo La Corogne overturned an early deficit to beat Villarreal. The Gabon striker created both of his side’s goals, first setting up Lusimi Cruz for the equaliser.
He then provided the decisive pass for Zakaria Eddahchouri, who scored in the 89th minute to complete the turnaround.
Villarreal had taken the lead through Ivory Coast forward Nicolas Pepe, who struck in the 19th minute. It was the former Gunner’s second goal of the season.
The result marked another influential display from Aubameyang, whose two assists directly shaped Deportivo La Corogne’s victory.
Kofane scores for Bayer Leverkusen
Bayer Leverkusen were held to a draw by Augsburg despite taking the lead through a goal involving two African players.
Cameroon striker Christian Kofane opened the scoring in the 18th minute, finishing low after receiving a long pass from Burkina Faso defender Edmond Tapsoba.
Leverkusen were unable to protect their advantage, however, and had to settle for a share of the points.
Other African players also played important roles for their clubs during the weekend. Malian midfielder Malick Yalcouye scored in Brighton’s 5-0 victory, contributing to a comprehensive success.
Guinea international Serhou Guirassy was involved twice for Dortmund. He had two goals disallowed but still supplied an assist for his team.
The weekend’s performances included goals, assists and decisive contributions across England, Spain, Germany and Italy, with Diao and Belloumi standing out for their two-goal displays.
