Aston Villa have taken command of their UEFA Champions League meeting with Club Bruges, leading 3-1 at half-time after a confident and highly effective opening 45 minutes in Belgium.
The English side established their authority early in their first appearance on the UEFA Champions League stage. They created the first major opportunity of the match and converted it in the 11th minute, when John McGinn opened the scoring for the Villans.
McGinn’s finish put Club Bruges under immediate pressure and created a tense atmosphere for the Belgian team. However, the hosts responded quickly rather than allowing Aston Villa to settle into a comfortable rhythm.
Club Bruges drew level in the 19th minute through Hugo Vetlesen, who completed a well-worked team move. The equaliser briefly offered the home side encouragement and suggested the match could develop into a closely fought contest.
Aston Villa, though, showed no signs of being unsettled by the setback. Unai Emery’s side regained control almost immediately, using their technical quality and composure to dictate the pace of the game.
Only a few minutes after Vetlesen’s goal, Emiliano Buendia restored Aston Villa’s advantage. His precise finish gave the visitors a 2-1 lead and marked another example of the English side’s ruthlessness in front of goal.
From that point, Aston Villa continued to look the more assured team. They moved the ball with confidence, managed the tempo effectively and prevented Club Bruges from creating any sustained danger. Emery’s players appeared technically superior during a dominant spell before the interval.
Nicolas Jackson was central to much of that attacking pressure. The Senegalese striker repeatedly tested the Club Bruges defence with his movement, making constant runs and forcing the home side’s defenders to work throughout the half.
His persistence was rewarded just before the break. In the 43rd minute, Jackson scored Aston Villa’s third goal to cap a first half in which the visitors had made their attacking threat count.
The goal left Club Bruges facing a difficult task at the interval. Having recovered from the early setback to equalise, the Belgian side were again two goals behind and now needed to produce a significantly improved performance after half-time if they were to turn the match around.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, could take confidence from a first half in which they responded immediately to the equaliser, controlled the game for long periods and converted their opportunities with impressive efficiency. The visitors went into the interval with a 3-1 lead and in a strong position to complete a successful start to their UEFA Champions League campaign.
