Arsene Wenger Failed in Moves for Both Antoine Griezmann & Robert Lewandowski This Summer

Published on: 27 August 2016

"?Arsenal made an approach for both Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski earlier this summer in a bid to add some firepower to their flagging strike-force, failing on both accounts.

"?Reported in the Sun, Arsene Wenger who has been heavily criticised during the transfer window made enquired over the availability of both forwards in an ambitious attempt to bring the pair to the Emirates.

The Gunners boss was eager to add a proven world class attacker to his club to provide support to Olivier Giroud, and appears to have settled for Deportivo Lucas Perez in a deal that will cost the club £17.1m.

Despite finishing second place last term, the Gunners were the lowest scorers of the top four finishers in the division, with Giroud netting just short of a quarter of the club's league goals last season.

However, Perez seems to be somewhat of an after thought following Jamie Vardy's decision to remain with Leicester City, whilst the latest revelations reveal Griezmann and Lewandowski were also on the club's hit list.

The Atletico striker, who has an £85.5m release clause, declined the chance to play in the Premier League under Wenger as he was more than settled with his life in Spain.

An Arsenal source reported that "the player told him outright that he was happy in Spain, and his family were enjoying life there.

"There is still interest. Why wouldn't there be in one of the best players in the world? But nothing will happen this summer at least," they went on to add.

Meanwhile a move for the prolific Lewandowski failed to materialise as the Premier League side were unable to match the wage demands of the Polish international, who is now expected to sign a new long-term deal with the German champions.
