Arsenal abandon plans to redevelop Emirates Stadium

Published on: 03 October 2026

Arsenal have decided not to proceed with plans to redevelop Emirates Stadium and significantly increase its current capacity of more than 60,000.

A working group had been examining the project since 2024. The club will instead focus on targeted improvements, including upgrades and expansions to selected areas of the ground and better facilities for supporters.

The main reason for dropping the redevelopment plans was the need to move Arsenal’s home matches to another stadium while construction took place, according to The Athletic.

Emirates Stadium opened in 2006. Before moving there, Arsenal played their home matches at the 35,000-capacity Highbury.
