Antonio Conte watched by Milan as pressure builds around Ruben Amorim

Antonio Conte is being discussed in Italy as a possible successor to Ruben Amorim at Milan, although there is currently no indication that the Portuguese manager is close to losing his job.

Milan’s defeat by Benfica in their opening Europa League match has changed the mood around the club. The Lisbon side were effectively the first serious opponents Milan had faced this season, making the result particularly significant.

Conte’s presence at San Siro on Wednesday evening immediately attracted attention. The former manager is currently regarded as the most high-profile Italian coach without a club.

However, Conte’s style of football is not particularly popular with Milan’s American owner, Gerry Cardinale. That position could change if Amorim begins to struggle in the same way Massimiliano Allegri did in the spring.

The possibility of Conte taking charge could therefore become a more serious issue during the next international break.
