Brahim Hemdani is preparing major changes in Algeria’s midfield, with Nabil Bentaleb and Ramiz Zerrouki reportedly set to miss his first squad despite both starting for the Fennecs at the 2026 World Cup.
The new manager appears ready to make his mark quickly, with early indications pointing to a younger and more creative midfield than the one used in recent years.
According to Khaled Mazouzi of AL24 News, Bentaleb, 31, and Zerrouki, 28, are not expected to feature in Hemdani’s initial selection. Their omission would represent a significant change, given that both were still regular starters during the World Cup 2026.
However, their performances during the tournament attracted criticism. Zerrouki, who has faced regular scrutiny from Algeria supporters in recent years, emerged from the competition particularly weakened in terms of his standing. Hemdani’s staff therefore appear intent on bringing a different approach to the centre of the team.
Three players could be given greater responsibility: Adil Aouchiche, Adil Bourabaa and Himad Abdelli. All three offer qualities associated more closely with creativity, forward movement and operating between the lines.
Aouchiche, 24, may finally be in line for a sustained opportunity at international level. The attacking midfielder, who came through the academy at PSG, has established himself as a starter for Schalke, who were promoted to the Bundesliga this season.
He made his Algeria debut against Guatemala in March under Vladimir Petkovic but was subsequently left out of the final squad for the World Cup. Hemdani’s arrival could now offer him another route into the team.
Bourabaa represents an even newer option. The 21-year-old midfielder, who has already been called up by Algeria’s U23 side, has made an encouraging start to the season with Le Mans following the club’s return to Ligue 1. He has scored once and provided one assist in his first three appearances.
Together with Aouchiche, Bourabaa offers the technical profile that appears to fit the new coaching staff’s desire for greater invention in possession.
Abdelli’s situation is different. In the months before the World Cup, his prospects deteriorated at Marseille following a confrontation with his then-manager, Senegalese coach Habib Beye. He was left out of the team at the worst possible time and missed the tournament.
Despite Marseille’s difficult start to the season, Abdelli has begun the campaign as a starter in each of the club’s first three matches. His return to the Algeria squad would therefore be less unexpected than the possible recalls of the other two midfielders.
The remaining question is how Hemdani intends to balance the midfield. Aouchiche, Bourabaa and Abdelli would all provide progressive passing and attacking intent, but it remains to be seen which player the manager will use behind them to provide defensive security.
