Algeria have appointed Brahim Hemdani as their national team coach for the upcoming international window, although the 48-year-old’s position appears to be provisional rather than a permanent appointment.
The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) confirmed the decision after a meeting of its Federal Bureau on Saturday. Hemdani will take charge of the Fennecs during the international period running from 21 September to 6 October.
His promotion follows a successful spell with Algeria’s Under-21 side, which culminated in the team winning the gold medal at the 2026 Mediterranean Games. The appointment also confirms earlier reports linking the former France-based midfielder with the senior national team.
However, according to journalist Samir Kaabouche, the FAF’s statement, due to be released in the coming hours, will describe Hemdani as “charge de mission”.
The wording is significant because it indicates that Hemdani has been appointed on an interim basis. The federation is expected to assess his work during the forthcoming international window before deciding whether to retain him, with his continuation likely to depend on whether his performances are considered satisfactory.
Hemdani will be supported by Anthar Yahia and Moussa Saib. Yahia has been appointed assistant coach, while Saib will take on the role of general manager.
Unlike Hemdani, both Yahia and Saib have been given permanent appointments. That removes uncertainty over the expected duration of their roles and suggests they will remain in place regardless of Algeria’s results over the next few weeks.
The first test of the new set-up will come in the opening two rounds of qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Algeria are scheduled to face Zambia before meeting Burundi.
The Fennecs will then complete the international gathering with a friendly match. Their opponents have not yet been confirmed, with Niger, Mali and Chad all possibilities.
Hemdani’s appointment marks the latest stage in a rise that has been strengthened by his achievements with the Under-21 team. The FAF’s decision gives him responsibility for the senior side at a significant point in Algeria’s calendar, while also leaving open the question of who will lead the team beyond the September window.
The federation’s formal announcement is expected to clarify the precise terms of Hemdani’s assignment, but the use of “charge de mission” indicates that the next three matches will play a central role in determining his future.
