AFCON

The journalists of African Football have picked their champions and top goal scorers and there are some interesting comments.

Neil Greig

Winners: Ivory Coast will do it this time. Yaya Toure to drive them home and important goals coming in from Bony and Gervinho.

Top scorer: Jonathan Pitroipa of Burkina Faso.

Surprise package: A young and bold South African side as well as Cameroon, a team rebuilding their pedigree.

Samm Audu

Winners: Ghana. They have been the most consistent team in the last 4 Afcons - reached the final in 2010 and last four in 2008, 2012 and 2013. They also boast of an experienced coach an Avram Grant, formerly of Chelsea.

Top scorer: Bernard Parker of South Africa

Surprise package: South Africa with Andile Jali in full flow in midfield should surprise many in Equatorial Guinea.

Bertin Basson

Winners: Cameroon. Impressive in qualifying Cameroon are one of the favourites heading into the tournament having negotiated their way past what was a potentially tricky Group D in qualifying.

Top scorer: Vincent Aboubakar of Cameroon (Asamoah Gyan to run him close if fully fit)

Surprise package: While I think the likes of Congo, DR Congo, Gabon, South Africa and Cape Verde are likely to be the name on peoples lip’s to cause a possible surprises, I feel there is a possibility Senegal could go far and possible win their first Afcon title in Equatorial Guinea, if things go their way.

Phumzile Ngcatshe

Winners: Bafana Bafana. Under Shakes Mashaba, Bafana Bafana go to the tournament as underdogs and that's something the players and the coach will enjoy as that puts them under no pressure at all.

Top scorer: Sibusiso Vilakazi.

Surprise package: South Africa.

Stephane deSaintsalvy Winners: Algeria. They acquired tremendous experience at the last FIFA World Cup and have what it takes to honour their status of top African nation with confidence and without any complacency.

Top scorer: Jonathan Pitroipa (Burkna Faso)

Surprise Package: Congo could be the surprise package of this tournament. By beating the Super Eagles on Nigerian soil during the qualifiers, Congo also proved that they can defeat anyone on a day. Also, 19-year old Cameroon keeper Joseph Fabrice Ondoa will shine in Equatorial Guinea and has what it takes to walk in the steps of the Lions' legendary keeper Thomas Nkono.

Lunga Ntuli

Winners: South Africa – it may appear like a dream but reality is that they have a dream to chase. Coach Shakes Mashaba shares the same similarities as Clive Barker who won the Afcon with them in 1996.

Top scorer: Wilfried Bony - Ivory Coast

Surprise package: Ivory Coast can be a surprise package. People are tired of expecting this powerful squad to win, so this year they come in with less expectation and could well surprise.

CIV has a quality squad with high profile players not bench Warner's in inferior leagues.
