AFCON'23: Awoniyi shows support to Victor Boniface following withdrawal

Following the withdrawal of Bayer Leverkusen goal poacher Victor Boniface from the 2023 AFCON in Cote d'Ivoire due to injury, Taiwo Awoniyi who suffered the same fate has sent a message of support to his countryman who seems unhappy with the development that ruled him out of the mundial, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Boniface suffered a muscle-tendon injury in the right adductor during training with the Super Eagles in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and has since been replaced by OGC Nice striker Terem Moffi.

Reacting to his withdrawal from AFCON 2023, on X, Boniface wrote: "U20 nations cup got injured seven days before the Nations Cup. Super Eagles got injured six days before the Nations Cup. Only God knows why.”

Taiwo Awoniyi who will not be part of this year’s AFCON due to injury sustained during the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in Uyo responding to Boniface writing on his X handle: "My guy mafo……. We gallant for that green white green. We go again…..no one fit kill light.”

Drawn in Group A with hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will open their bid for a 4th AFCON trophy against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday 14th January, 2024.
