AFCON Qualifier: Rwanda's Coach Spittler Targets Historic Victory Over Super Eagles in Uyo

Published on: 18 November 2024

Rwanda’s head coach, Torsten Spittler, is determined to lead his team to a victory against Nigeria in their crucial final AFCON 2025 qualifier on Monday, Nigeriasoccernet.com writes.

Speaking during a pre-match press conference at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Spittler emphasized the importance of securing all three points to qualify for the tournament in Morocco.

Should Rwanda pull off an unlikely upset, they will secure their second-ever AFCON appearance, with their first being in 2004. Spittler expressed confidence despite the challenge posed by the three-time African champions.

“We know Nigeria is a very strong side, and it’s going to be a tough match,” Spittler acknowledged. “But our mission here is clear: we must win to have a chance of qualifying.”

He also mentioned the uncertainty surrounding Nigeria’s approach to the match since they have already secured qualification, noting that despite this, they don’t expect the Super Eagles to take it lightly.

Spittler highlighted his team’s efforts throughout the campaign, despite setbacks like their recent loss to Libya. “The important thing for us is the progress we’ve made in developing our playing style,” he said. He also addressed Rwanda’s tactical approach to stopping Nigeria’s potent attack.

“We’ll have to work as a unit. Facing Nigeria’s strikers one-on-one is nearly impossible, so we must ensure we have enough players to challenge them.”

Looking ahead, Spittler remains optimistic, noting Rwanda’s top position in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and expressed hope that his team can capitalize on the opportunity.
