Ghana assistant coach Maxwell Konadu says captain Asamoah Gyan will be subjected to a late fitness test to see if he can play in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations semi final clash against Equatorial Guinea.
The 29-year-old is struggling with an injury he picked up after suffering from a brutal challenge in the 3-0 win over Guinea in the quarter finals.
Gyan only returned from Mongomo – where he was flown to undergo further examinations on his injury – on Tuesday afternoon and has since not trained with the side.
Various reports suggests the prolific Al Ain ace will play no part in the semi final clash against the tournament hosts.
But Konadu says there is still a possibility the inspirational could play in Thursday’s clash once he passes a late fitness test.
“Gyan is so important to this team and we always wish he could take part [in the game against Equatorial Guinea],” he said.
“We are not ruling him out yet but we’ll see how it goes tomorrow.”
The assistant Black Stars trainer however says the team is equipped with competent players to step up in the absence of their trusted scorer.
“But just in case he [Gyan] cannot make it, we’ve been there before,” he added.
“We’ve played matches that he wasn’t part of the team and yet still the rest of the guys played out their hearts and got us this far.
“So yes, it is good, he is important for Ghana but without him Ghana has to learn to move on.”
