AFCON 2015: Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan gutted after final defeat to Ivory Coast

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan insists they gave their best shot but were unlucky to beat Ivory Coast in the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Both sides failed to score after extra-time and the winner of the 30th edition of the Nations Cup had to be decided via penalties.

After 22 spot-kicks it was the Ivorians who triumphed 9-8 thanks to goalkeeper Boubacar Barry’s final effort.

Gyan recovered from an abdominal injury he picked up during the quarter-final win against Guinea to start the final match.

But he could not last the entire duration and was substituted by midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu just before the shoot-outs.

“Being outside, I had to support my colleagues. We were leading 2-0 and Cote d’Ivoire came back and they won. We had an edge to win but that’s football,” Gyan said in a post-match interview.

“I don’t regret our performance. Cote d’Ivoire have lost twice on penalties (2006 and 2012) and this was their third time and they won it. I’m sad at the moment. We lost today but its not over yet.

“We were hoping to make history, but it did not happen.”

Yes we had the game won yet the chance to win the tournament fell to a debutant of all the players out there. Whatever happened to desire and fearlessness in some ghana youth eh? All the same well done lads
