Pyongyang: Khamphanh Sonthanalay scored twice as Laos came from behind to beat Chinese Taipei 3-1 on Wednesday and begin their Group G AFC U-23 Championship qualifying campaign in fine fashion.
Despite their eventual capitulation, it was Chinese Taipei who went ahead at Pyongyang’s May Day Stadium when striker Jhou Cheng found the net after only three minutes.
Laos duly replied when Sonthanalay bagged his first of the day on 26 minutes, before the defender put his side ahead and bagged his second of the day some three minutes before the half-time whistle.
Phoutthasay Khochalern further extended the Southeast Asian side’s lead four minutes after the break as Laos eased to an opening day win.
The Laotians are now scheduled to play Hong Kong on Friday, while Chinese Taipei will be looking to reignite their qualification hopes when they tackle group hosts DPR Korea on the same day
