2016 WOMEN AFCON: Black Queens Hold Overrated Falcons

Published on: 24 November 2016

Ghana's female senior national team the Black Queens held the Super Falcons of Nigeria to a pulsating 1-1 draw at the Stadé Limbe Sports Stadium in the second group game of the 2016 Africa Women's Afcon.

Asisat Oshoala's free kick went directly into the Ghana net in the 18th minute breaking the virginity of the game and giving the Falcons the lead but Elizabeth Addo levelled the scores before the break.

Ten minutes to the break, a Portia Boakye pass into the Falcons eighteen found Elizabeth Addo who dribbled through the Nigerian defence but was knocked on the ankle in the glaring view of the referee who whistled for a spot kick for Ghana.

Elizabeth opted for the kick and expertly sent the Alaba Jonathan the wrong way to fetch the equaliser for the Black Queens, registering her second goal in the competition.

Both sides returned from the break more purposeful than in the first half but it was the Nigerians who knocked at the Ghanaian goal area for a second goal but Rosemary Ampem cleared the danger just two minutes into the second half.

The best chance after 55 minutes fell to Samira Suleman but her shot found Alaba at the first post after taking on Faith Ikidi.

The Super Falcons turned the heat on the Black Queens after the half hour mark but Ghana shot stopper Nana Ama was up to the task, saving the Queens on two dangerous occasions.

A cross from Portia Boakye from the left side of the Falcons' defence found Florence Dadson connecting excellently but her drive missed the post by inches.

Samira Suleman located Dadson with an excellent through pass but the Nigerian goalie Alaba came out at the right time to stop the dangerous attack.

Two minutes to end regulation time, Faith Ikidi dribbled past the strong Ghanaian defence but the final delivery from Francisca Ordega was poor giving the Ghanaians some respite.

Nigeria had earlier mauled Mali by 6-0 and we're overwhelming favourites to beat the Black Queens but the Ghanaians who won 3-1 in the first group game against Kenya proved their mettle by holding the group leaders.

Ghana is now second in the group on the same points with leaders Nigeria.

Ghana will play Mali on Saturday with Nigeria engaging Kenya in the last group games.
