WCAFCL: Bayelsa Queens falter in opener

Nigeria representative in the Women's CAF Champions League, Bayelsa Queens of Yenegoa started their debut campaign on a losing note.

The Prosperity Girls fell by two goals to one defending champions, Mamelodi Sundown Ladies of South Africa at the Grand Stade De Marrakech.

Bayelsa Queens had started well with the momentum on their side, but lack of team work and inability to convert chances became their undoing.

The South Africans later grew into the game seizing momentum from the Nigerian club side and it was only a matter of time before the first goal would come.

By the 31st minute, the goal came as Lelona Daweti put Sundowns Ladies ahead with a good strike.

An increase in the intensity of the game for the Queens, but the goal did not come as the first half ended 1-0 in favour of the Mamelodi Ladies.

In the second half, it was the South African champions that stepped up the plate, pressing hard for the second even though the Nigerian champions put up a good fight.

By the 57th minute, Lelona Daweti scored her second becoming the first to score a brace in this year's edition of the competition.

At this point, it was looking difficult for the Queens from Nigeria to get back to the game, but conceding the second goal seem to wake the girls.

It was Bayelsa Queens then onwards as pile the pressure for that goal that could change the complexion of the game.

In the 80th minute, Bayelsa pulled one back courtesy Mary-Magdalene who scores her side's first goal in the competition and set up a nail biting end to the game.

The Nigerian girls did push for the equaliser, but a disciplined and effective defense ensured the South African ladies held on to win.
