Super Eagles Captain Wants His Team To Stay Top Of Group B Table

Nigeria captain Mikel Obi is confident that the Super Eagles are good enough to stay on top of their Russia 2018 World Cup qualifying group till the end of the campain and claim the sole ticket. 

The Eagles got their quest to a perfect start with a 2-1 victory over Zambia in Ndola on Sunday, courtesy of goals from Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Algeria and Cameroon played a 1-1 draw to leave Nigeria on top of the Group B table.

“I have belief that we can reach new heights with this team," Mikel told nigeriasoccernet.com. "The boys are so committed that it makes you happy. The coaching crew is made up of very mature and brilliant people who respect the players. We are onto a good thing.”

Manchester City youngster Iheanacho has now scored in each of his last four matches for Nigeria: against Mali in France; Luxembourg in Luxembourg City; Tanzania in Uyo and; Zambia in Ndola.

Mikel added: “We have a very good chance to qualify for the World Cup if we keep our heads and play at our best level. Each and every one of us is determined to go to the World Cup. Now that we are top of the table, we have to remain there.”

The Super Eagles’ next game is against the Fennecs of Algeria, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Saturday, 12 November.
