"?Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce is targeting several players in the January transfer window after being handed funds by the club's owners, according to "?The Sun

Bruce has steadied the Villa ship following his appointment as Roberto Di Matteo's successor in November and is now keen to make use of his first window at the helm to mould the squad that fits his vision.

One player Bruce is said to be targeting is Fulham's Tom Cairney after selling him at Hull three years ago. Cairney has established himself as one of the finest midfielders in the Championship and is currently valued at £10m by the Cottagers.

With a £25m war-chest to spend, Bruce is also eyeing a move for Nottingham Forest's Henri Lansbury, with moves for Barnsley duo Conor Hourihane and James Bree and an ambitious swoop for Middlesbrough striker "?Jordan Rhodes on the cards.

Following Villa's disappointing 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Saturday, Bruce said he is still trying to instil confidence in his players as he looks for new recruits: "We'll work with what we've got, try to make us better and get away from this mentality," he added.

"We need to be bigger and better and it's my job to breathe a bit of confidence back. We can't keep adding surgery because that is what we've done in the past. You seen today, as soon as we lose a goal it changes," he added. "The goal sums us up. It was so sloppy. For 25 minutes it was far too easy down our left in particular. It was an awful goal to concede."?
