Rohr: Nigeria must not miss another World Cup

Published on: 27 June 2024

The Squirrels of Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr has expressed his concerned that “it will be a little shameful” should the Super Eagles of Nigeria fail to qualify for 2026 FIFA World Cup, Nigeriasocernet.com reports.

Rohr who between 2016 and 2021 tutored the Super Eagles, coached the Beninese to a 2-1 victory over Nigeria earlier in June, leaving the three time African champions to walk through a thin rope for qualification.

The German tactician whose team is tied on point with Rwanda and South Africa on the group table is of the opinion that the Nigerian team can not afford to miss out of the World Cup having missed out of the previous edition in 2022.

“If they miss another one, for such a football country with the best players in Africa, it would be a little bit shameful,” Rohr stated.

“So, I think the players will do everything to go there (World Cup), and also the federation and the staff. But now, of course they must be realistic and say that it’s only three points in four games.”

The three-time African champions are second from bottom in Group C with three points from four games.
