David de Gea's current contract at Manchester United contains a release clause of £40m, which Real Madrid are able to match if they wish before June 15.

Spanish daily newspaper AS reported that United will not be able to stand in their star man's way of leaving Old Trafford should the figure be met by Real before that time. De Gea was infamously set to join Real on the final day of the summer transfer window last year, though the deal wasn't completed before the deadline and fell through as a result.

In the aftermath of the saga, De Gea quickly put pen to paper on a new long-term contract - though it was rumoured at the time that a clause was contained in the agreement. The latest story claims that Real will be able to negotiate with the player to meet the sum, though they on;y have another month to do so.

Another report from "?Mail Online has recently claimed that De Gea will look to leave United this summer if the club decide to keep Louis van Gaal on as manager, while he could be convinced to stay if Jose Mourinho does, as speculated, end up taking over.

The player and ex-Chelsea boss are both represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes, who will push to convince De Gea to stay at Old Trafford if Mourinho is brought in after the FA Cup final clash with Crystal Palace. De Gea is reportedly growing frustrated and disillusioned with life working under the much-maligned Van Gaal - who has failed to guide the team to the Champions League places.

De Gea has been crowned United's player of the season in each of the last three campaigns, and is considered a strong fan-favourite despite the ongoing speculation over his next move.
