NWFL: Ekiti Queens beat Rivers United to retain topflight status as Sunshine Queens relegate

Ekiti Queens were the biggest winners in the match week of the Nigeria Women Football League after a win over former champions, Rivers Angels guaranteed their stay in the league on Wednesday, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Ekiti Queens defeated the 2021 champions 2-0 at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti courtesy of goals from Olaleye Odunayo and Salau Rashidat in the first and second half.

Ekiti Queens who started the day bottom of group B needed a win hoping that Sunshine Queens lose went into the day's game with high expectation to win.

Olaleye Odunayo gave the Ado Ekiti side a goal to build on after 19 minutes of play after Sarah Iloduba was  brought down by Jones Imoh in the box.

With survival at stake, Ekiti had to hold on to their lead through our the remainder of the first phase of the encounter.

Salau Rashidat then added the second to seal the win for the BAORESS Babes to help them retain their place in the league after barely a year in the league.

Meanwhile, Sunshine Queens lost 2-1 to Remo Stars Lady at Ikenne Remo Stars Stadium to end their campaign on relegation.

Goalkeeper Precious Aaron fumbled a Taiwo Adegoke free-kick for a corner in which Adaobi Okah headed home to put the hosts in the lead before doubling the lead on 54 minute after nodding home again from a corner kick.

Two minutes later, Sunshine Queens pulled one back through Ajibade Taiwo, but it only proved a consolation as it ended in a loss for the Akure Babes.
