NPFL Review: Plateau extend lead, Sunshine win away

Published on: 20 July 2017

Plateau United continued to stay in top spot in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) after seeing off FC Ifeanyiubah 1-0 at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos on Wednesday.

The win helped Plateau United open a five-point lead at the top.

Playing on a patchy Rwang Pam Stadium pitch, Plateau United benefited from referee Saleh Mohammed's incorrect call to score 12 yards.

The referee awarded a spot kick to the league leaders after he ruled that Hamzat Owolabi was fouled in the box when the Plateau United forward actually fell on his own.

Emma James scored from the spot on 13 minutes. His goal proved just enough for Plateau United to claim a 16th win of the campaign.

Lobi Stars were four minutes away from a famous away win at Enyimba after Anthony Okpotu scored on 18 minutes. It was a crazy four minutes as Enyimba conjured a comeback to win 2-1. Mfon Udoh and Ikechukwu Ibenegbu scored the goals.

Last season's runners-up Rivers United found themselves pegged back at their Yakubu Gowon Stadium as Sunshine Stars claimed a 1-0 win. Despite having two first-half goals chalked off by referee Patrick Nworie including a well-taken Sikiru Alimi strike, the Akure Gunners still did not let that dampen their spirit.

Ezekiel Thompson popped up with the winner 22 minutes to the end for Sunshine Stars to ease their relegation worries and make them the only team to win back-to-back away matches this season in the NPFL.

Wikki Tourists and Katsina United defeated ABS FC and Kano Pillars respectively by similar scorelines of 1-0. Harrison Madu and Martins Usule scored for Wikki and Katsina United respectively.

Bottom-placed Remo Stars left till the last seconds at home to earn a point off 3SC in a southwest derby. Ekene Awazie's goal on the cusp of full time cancelled Moses James's strike for 3SC.

Adamu Hassan scored twice for Nasarawa United as they ran out 2-1 winners against El-Kanemi Warriors. Hashimu Haliru got El-Kanemi's goal.

Two games - Gombe United versus Niger Tornadoes and Abia Warriors versus Akwa United - ended goalless.

The Rangers - MFM FC game was called off owing to heavy rain. Rangers were leading as at half time through Chiamaka Madu's goal on 15 minutes. The game will be concluded on Thursday morning.
