NPFL: Akwa United beat reigning champions Enyimba on return to Uyo

Akwa United recorded a vital victory in their Nigeria Premier Football League match day 23 fixture against defending champions, Enyimba FC on Monday, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The Promise Keepers defeated the People's Elephant 3-1 to move to the 17th position as they returned to the Nest of Champions.

In a pulsating encounter, the hosts were on a high with an early lead courtesy of Left back David Philip's tap in from close range.

The host had the momentum, but it was the visitors who looked more dangerous to score a minute later after goalkeeper Jean Efala read well to punch out Imo Obot's free kick.

Obot almost equalled score in the half hour mark after another free-kick ricocheted the woodwork.

Uche Collins also came close to equalising at the dead of the first half, but his effort, after beating a defender was blocked by United's defense.

Obot got close to scoring at the start of the second phase but his free-kick hit the woodwork for the second time.

The host got on the other hand found the net, scoring the second goal with 5 minutes into the half through Suleiman Sani.

Suleiman Sani received a good pass and rounded the goalkeeper before slotting the ball into an empty net to double the lead.

Jean Efala made a great save to tip the ball away from goal onto the crossbar again from another Imo Obot's free kick after United's second goal.

In the 72nd minute, Substitute Chijioke Mbaoma pulled one back for Enyimba from the spot after Efala brought down the striker in the box.

However, Suleiman Sani scored his second of the afternoon with a delightful finish to secure 3 points for Akwa United on their return to Uyo.
