Manchester United's Anthony Martial Strike Is Unpopular Choice for Goal of the Season

Published on: 25 May 2016

"?Manchester United forward Anthony Martial came out on top in the official Premier League Twitter account's "Goal Cup", for his side's flowing team goal against Stoke in February.

However, according to "?The Sport Bible, many fans are unhappy with the decision.

And the PL Goal Cup winner is....#GoalCupMartialhttps://t.co/AYArUG77ze

"?"?The 20-year-old Frenchman has enjoyed a brilliant debut season in England, scoring seventeen goals in all competitions, including eleven in the league.

Such form has seen Martial make his international debut this season, and he has impressed enough to secure a place in France's 23-man squad for the forthcoming European Championships.

While there can be little doubt that Martial's season has been a success, there was much disagreement over his "Goal of the Season" award.

The Frenchman came through clashes with Dele Alli, Eden Hazard and Christian Benteke to win the fan-voted Twitter award, with Matt Ritchie, Cuco Martina, Dimitri Payet and Jamie Vardy all also in the running.

The votes are in... And congratulations to @AnthonyMartial - you're in the Goal Cup final...! pic.twitter.com/4CeAHvrAGZ

Alli's strike against Crystal Palace in January won the Match of the Day Goal of the Season award, after a combination of a public vote and the affirmation of pundits Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy.

It is clear from the incredulous reaction to the Goal Cup result that the England midfielder's exquisite volley captured the public imagination more than Martial's effort, which was the culmination of an incisive Manchester United breakaway, with Benteke's acrobatic volley against United also drawing plenty of support.

So Martial's goal was better than Alli's, Kane's, Benteke's, Ritchie's? @premierleague #joke

Many fans feel that it is purely Manchester United's online community that have fired Martial to glory, and not the merits of the goal itself.

While this may be partially true, it would be wrong to undervalue a goal that was reminiscent of the swashbuckling Manchester United sides of days gone by.

@premierleague Benteke's goal was clearly better, and Alli's goal should have won. Man United fans care too much about Internet polls.
