English giants Manchester United and French side Lille's hopes of signing Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris this month have been delayed because of a FIFA regulation preventing players from joining three clubs in one season.

Manchester United and Lille are rumoured to be keen on signing the Ghana international striker from Turkish side Trabzonspor this month as the January transfer window in the major leagues of Europe has opened.

Waris himself is keen on ending Turkish nightmare to gain the much-needed playing time in the major leagues of Europe as he has been played as a winger since arriving at Trabzonspor in the summer.

With his favourite position being the main target man or the top striker he has struggled to replicate the form that saw him finish as the top scorer in the Swedish top-flight tow seasons ago and also as one of the top players in France when he joined Valenciennes in the second half of last term.

However since arriving from Russian side Spartak Moscow on a permanent deal in the summer, Waris has been played as a winger and sometimes played from the bench which has led to him unable to score goals.

Having already played for Spartak and Trabzonspor so far this season he won't be able to leave the club this January because of a FIFA law.

”Lille and a few English clubs are interested in signing Waris,” Trabzonspor president Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu about the interest in the 23-year-old striker.

”Lille were also interested in Waris before we signed him. However, a player cannot play for three different clubs in one season so he will have to wait until the end of the season.

”We know Manchester United are monitoring him too.”

English side Stoke City are also said to be interested in signing the Ghana international with about £6m to be tabled.
