Leighton James Column: Andre Ayew lucky to avoid serious injury

Andre Ayew could have suffered an injury as serious as Luke Shaw's after that horror challenge from Valon Behrami last Saturday.

There was no attempt to play the ball and it was undoubtedly a red card.

Thankfully, referee Robert Madley had an excellent game and wasted no time in giving Behrami his marching orders.

Ayew could easily have suffered a serious leg break, just as Shaw did when playing for Manchester United against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.

 And it's a good job that Madley acted so quickly because there could have been a bloodbath otherwise.

Some people may not like it, but players will seek their own retribution if they feel the referee is not properly taking care of matters.

When a player suffers a serious injury that may put him out for months, somehow a three-match ban just does not seem a satisfactory punishment.

I think there's definitely an argument for saying the offender should remain suspended until the player he hurt is fit enough to return.

The damage inflicted on someone should be taken into account when deciding what action to take.
