West Ham 0-5 Man City: Hammers Crash Out of FA Cup After Guardiola's City Run Riot

Published on: 06 January 2017

Manchester City left the London Stadium with a fantastic win, having beaten West Ham 5-0 on their home ground in the FA Cup third round on Friday night.

The teams came into the match boasting strong line-ups, with the Hammers starting Andy Carroll, Michail Antonio and Manuel Lanzini in attack, while the visitors fielded Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and David Silva.

City had the first opportunity early on, as Pablo Zabaleta got off a powerful shot from a great position in the box after Silva crossed in low from the right flank. A West Ham shirt was there to block, however.

Antonio then forced a save from Willy Caballero with a driven shot around the 14th minute.

It took a stupendous last ditch tackle from Winston Reid to prevent Sterling from scoring in the 26th minute. The ex-Liverpool man raced into the box off a great, defence-splitting pass from Silva, beat his marker by cutting back on his left, but was stopped by the onrushing Reid just as he was about to pull the trigger.

The visitors pulled out in front in the 32nd minute through Yaya Toure's penalty, with Zabaleta having won it by going down in the box from Angelo Ogbonna's challenge following a neat pass from Silva on the right side.

West Ham got a huge chance to hit back two minutes later. However, Sofiane Feghouli wasn't able to tuck in the rebound after Caballero parried Antonio's shot into his path. The goal was gaping, with the keeper still grounded, but Gael Clichy was able to slide in and get just enough of the ball to save his team from conceding.

City doubled their lead five minutes from half time courtesy of an own goal from Havard Nordtveit, who tried to prevent Bacary Sagna's cross from reaching Raheem Sterling.

Three minutes later, it was already 3-0. A scintillating bit of play between Aguero and Sterling allowed City to break the back line and find themselves three on one. The ball came in from the right, and Silva coolly stopped it, waited for Adrian to go to ground, then blasted in from point blank range.

1:46 - There was just 1 minute and 46 seconds between Manchester City's second and third goals against West Ham. Clinical.

The whistle couldn't come any sooner for West Ham, who left themselves with a real uphill battle for the second half.

Things got even more complicated for Slaven Bilic's side in the following period, and five minutes into the half, Aguero connected with Toure's shot to chip it over Adrian for 4-0. Sterling - who put in a remarkable performance - set up the play with clever dribbling to free Toure up for the shot at the top of the box, leaving the Argentine to turn it in.

City, seemingly satisfied, took their foot off the gas, but West Ham still failed to carve out any real chances, and Pep Guardiola's side would add a fifth in the 84th minute, with John Stones scoring his first goal for the club, rising to meet a corner to give City a 5-0 advantage.

If it wasn't already obvious at halftime, there would be no return for West Ham in this one, as they bowed out without much of a challenge.
