Watford Appoint Walter Mazzarri as Successor to Quique Sanchez Flores

"?Watford have confirmed that former Sampdoria, Napoli and Inter boss Walter Mazzarri is the man who will take over from the departed Quique Sanchez Flores as manager at Vicarage Road next season following the Spaniard's recent exit.

Mazzarri, who hasn't worked in management since being sacked by Inter in November 2014, will formally begin his new job on 1st July.

The decision from the Watford board to move Flores on was met with question marks after he had guided the club to Premier League safety for the first time following immediate returns to the Football League on each of their last two top flight seasons.

The Europa League winner had also taken the club to Wembley for an FA Cup semi-final, the closest they have come to major silverware since the heyday of the 1980s and Elton John.

But in Mazzarri, Watford have a coach befitting the obvious ambition of the Pozzo family. It was he who oversaw Napoli's rise back to the top end of Italian football during a four-year spell on the Amalfi coast.

Since brief success when Diego Maradona donned the shirt in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the club had suffered and were in Serie C1 as recently as 2006. After Mazzarri took over in 2009, he had the team in the Champions League by 2011 and winning the Coppa Italia in 2012.

That year he was honoured with the prestigious Enzo Bearzot award, named for Italy's legendary 1982 World Cup winning manager, and the same prize that was recently awarded to Claudio Ranieri for his achievements with Leicester this season.
