Veteran Juventus Star Laments Italian Super Cup Penalty Shootout Defeat to AC Milan

Published on: 23 December 2016

"?Gianluigi Buffon has claimed Juventus should have "killed off" AC Milan in their eventual 4-3 penalty shootout defeat in the Italian Super Cup on Friday.

The Juventus captain lamented his side's loss at the Jassam Bin Hamad stadium in Doha following Mario Pasalic's matchwinning spot kick.

The Serie A champions had bossed the opening exchanges of the game, with Giorgio Chiellini's sublime volley handing Juventus a deserved lead after 18 minutes. However, Giacomo Bonaventura's equaliser seven minutes before half-time levelled proceedings, and the sides couldn't be separated in normal time - a result that led to the sudden death penalty shootout.

Milan's Gianluca Lapadula contrived to miss his side's first spot kick but, after Mario Mandzukic hit the bar and Paulo Dybala saw his effort saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, Pasalic stepped forward to hand Milan their first Super Cup triumph in five seasons.

Speaking to "?Juventus' official site after the game, veteran shot stopper Buffon solemnly declared that it was a "shame" that his side couldn't have done more to secure victory during their first-half dominance.

He said: "It's a shame, especially as we led both in normal time and on penalties. We could have avoided the match being dragged out. We should have realised that we could have killed off the game in those blistering opening 25 minutes because it was an even contest after that. AC Milan showed determination - they played well."

The 38-year-old also commented on how 2016 had been overall throughout the calendar year for Massimiliano Allegri's men.

Buffon helped I Bianconeri secure a domestic treble last term, with the club winning the Scudetto, Italian Cup and Italian Super Cup in 2015/16, and he stated that 2016 had left him feeling content with the silverware Juventus had won.

He added: "A good year. There were lots of good things - it hasn't ended as we would have liked but that's part and parcel of the game."
