Transfers: Awoniyi eyes Mainz return in January as Forest struggle continues

Published on: 25 December 2025

Nigeria striker, Taiwo Awoniyi could be heading back to Bundesliga side Mainz in a January transfer, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The 28-year-old, who played for the club on loan from Liverpool in the 2019/20 season, is now out of favor at Nottingham Forest, making just five league appearances this season.

Mainz, currently bottom of the Bundesliga table, are looking to bolster their attack and see Awoniyi as an ideal candidate.

The move would reunite him with coach Urs Fischer, who oversaw his successful spell at Union Berlin and facilitated his permanent transfer from Liverpool in 2021.

Awoniyi scored once in 12 league appearances during his time at Mainz and has struggled to find form at Forest, currently behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus in the pecking order.
