Tottenham Target Victor Wanyama Wants to Leave Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur are set to swoop for Victor Wanyama after the midfield enforcer revealed his desire to leave Southampton, according to "?Squawka

The former Celtic man was the subject of a bid from Spurs in the 2015 summer transfer window, but the Saints rejected that offer and refused to entertain the notion of losing their star player.

However, Southampton's board reached a gentleman's agreement with Wanyama's representatives last season that, in the event of interest in his signature, they would be willing to listen to offers for the 23-year-old.

Now that the 2015/16 campaign is over, Wanyama has asked the south coast club to honour that agreement - with Southampton reluctantly agreeing to do so.

The Kenya international is believed to be valued at around £25m, and Tottenham are said to be ready to negotiate a deal for Wanyama at that price.

The Lilywhites are eager to bolster their first-team squad ahead of next term after qualifying for the UEFA Champions League on account of finishing second in the Barclays Premier League.

Spurs' current first choice centre midfield pairing is comprised of Eric Dier and Moussa Dembele, but the Londoners want to add further quality to their midfield ranks.

Doubts over the futures of Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason persist after it was rumoured that the pair could be sold by manager Mauricio Pochettino, and Wanyama's signing would go some way to adding steel and strength to his midfield options.

Question marks remain over Wanyama's disciplinary record after he received three red cards throughout 2015/16, but Pochettino is thought to be overlooking that statistic in a bid to land his man.

Wanyama originally signed for Southampton for £12.5m from Scottish club Celtic, and has gone on to amass 97 appearances for the St.Marys-based club, scoring four goals in the process.
