"?Tottenham appear to have won the race to sign defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama from Southampton, successfully seeing off competition from the title winners Leicester - according to the "?Mirror.

The north London club are said to have paid £11m for the Kenyan midfield star after he failed to sign the new contract Saints had offered him.

Southampton had offered Wanyama a new deal to keep him at St. Mary's, however the 24-year-old declined and so the managerless club have opted to sell up and cash in on their star.

Victor Wanyama arrived at Southampton in 2013 for a reported £12.5m from Scottish giants Celtic. The midfielder then went on to make a total of 83 appearances for the south coast side.

With a fee being believed to have been agreed it is expected the player will travel to Spurs to conduct a medical in the upcoming days before sealing a deal with Tottenham. Wanyama is seen as the ideal candidate to replace Algerian Nabil Bentaleb at White Hart Lane, with "?Tottenham set to offload Bentaleb.

Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, had tried to use Nabil Bentaleb or Ryan Mason in an exchange deal with cash to Southampton, but they remain to be interested in a part exchange deal.

Maurcio Pochettino made Wanyama his first signing, when he himself was at the Saints. Should a deal successfully be completed he will become the first player Pochettino has convinced to join him at Spurs from Southampton.

The Spurs boss would ideally prefer the Kenyan to contest with Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele, both currently playing at Euro 2016, so they are all competing for a starting place; to really push the players and get the most from them all in the next Premier League campaign.
