Stoke City's Glenn Whelan Encourages Club to Push on Next Season

"?Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan has encouraged the club to build on their third successive top-half finish and continue to improve next season.

As per "?the club's official website, the 32-year-old Irishman, who is set to be named in Martin O'Neill's squad for the forthcoming European Championships, believes that while 2015/16 was a successful campaign for the Potters, there is still more to come from Mark Hughes' side.

"The club wants to push on and get as far as possible," Whelan told The Potters' website.

"We set ourselves a target at the start of the season and it's unfortunate we didn't achieve that," he continued. "To finish ninth and still be disappointed shows how far we have come as a club."

Despite a 2-1 home win against West Ham to round off the season and secure a ninth place finish, Stoke City fell three points short of last season's tally of 54, which was a Premier League record for the club.

Tony Pulis took the Potters into the Premier League in 2008 and his functional style established the club as a top-flight mainstay in the following five seasons. However, in 2013, Mark Hughes was brought in by chairman Peter Coates, to oversee a transformation in the playing style and perception of the Staffordshire outfit.

The ex-Blackburn boss has done just that, illustrated by the club's ability to attract players of the calibre of Xherdan Shakiri and Bojan in recent seasons. However, Hughes will have to continue his side's on-pitch progress to justify such vast investment, as Whelan acknowledges.
