The 40-year-old thanked his country, teammates and fans for their support during the time he spent wearing Ireland's shirt.

Having represented Ireland at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea, Given also stood between the sticks for the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine in 2012.

He was also part of the squad for this year's Euros in France, but did not feature.

This isn't the first time that Given has retired from international football. The stopper hung his gloves in 2012, but returned to the fold at manager Martin O'Neill's behest and played a huge role in his country's qualification for the Euros.

"It's every boy's dream to play football for his school, his local club, and maybe in his wildest dreams, his country," wrote Given in his farewell letter.

"I've been blessed that I was able to do this, from kickabouts in the backyard at home in Co. Donegal with my brothers to playing for St. Columbas college Stranorlar, Lifford Celtic, and then to making my debut with the Republic of Ireland at age 19.

"I'm one of the lucky ones who got to wear the jersey for his country and wore the badge with pride 134 times."

Thanks to all the irish fans around the world ??????? pic.twitter.com/KSS1U6yZPl
