Southampton are preparing to offer a contract extension to Republic of Ireland international Shane Long to put an end to the transfer speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool and Spurs, according to Irish publication Independent.ie.
The 29-year-old has been in sensational form for the Saints this season, netting 10 goals in the Premier League to help Ronald Koeman's side to an impressive 6th place finish.
His form has attracted the interest of a number of Premier League clubs, namely Liverpool and Tottenham, and speculation of a move away from Saint Mary's was fuelled further by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino appearance at the Aviva stadium on Friday.
The Republic of Ireland international featured in the friendly against the Netherlands and Pochettino was reportedly involved in a deep discussion with Long's adviser, Pat Nolan.
But it is understood Southampton are preparing to offer the former Hull City forward a renewal on his current contract, which only has two years remaining, to fend off the recent transfer speculation.
The Saints have already moved quickly to tie down their key players to long-term contracts in recent weeks with the likes of centre-back Virgil van Dijk, 'keeper Fraser Forster, and James Ward-Prowse all prolonging their stay in the South Coast of England.
Their efforts may be aided by the report suggesting the Republic of Ireland international is more than content at Saint Mary's due to the progress made by the club, emphasised by their second successive season in the Europa League.
The 29-year-old's form has vindicated manager Ronald Koeman's decision to play the forward in his favoured position of centre forward and his form may have cemented his position after reports of a possible Graziano Pelle departure this summer.
The former West Brom forward is part of Martin O'Neil's Republic of Ireland squad heading to Euro 2016 this summer where the Saints striker is expected to lead the line.
