Silvio Berlusconi: Football Is Becoming More and More Like a Monopoly

Published on: 30 May 2016

"?AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi is sick of the financial demands of football and has labelled it like a monopoly, according to"? Football Italia.

The Milan president has become increasingly disillusioned with the financial demands of a football club and said it "has become a kind of Monopoly"?.

"I courted Guardiola when he was at Barcelona because I found their style of play most satisfying. He then became the Bayern [Munich] Coach and now they tell me that he's moved again.

"As champions, they've become renowned, but their demands are there to show how today's football has become a kind of Monopoly," Berlusconi said.

In regards to AC Milan and their current stadium the San Siro, Berlusconi said he would ideally not want them to move as he enjoys watching games in the famous arena.

"I'd rather Milan stayed at San Siro, but if different owners want to build the most beautiful stadium that exists then I'd accept this eventuality.

"I fell in love with San Siro, we saw how well it held the European Cup final. San Siro is built for football. I can't enjoy the spectacle of football when I go to Naples or Rome.

"San Siro, however, has never let me down, and it was the venue for many of our [trophy] wins, so I'm personally very attached to San Siro," Berlusconi added.

The Italian is not, however, expecting a return of club legend Paolo Maldini because he has "embarked on a different path".

One player who wont be embarking on a different path any time soon, according to Berlusconi, is 17-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

"I wouldn't sell Donnarumma for €80m, which is the amount he's worth. For us, he's unsellable," Berlusconi said.
