The news comes after Van Gaal guided his team to FA Cup success, an achievement in which he was also rewarded with a £400,000 bonus.
"?"?Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is widely predicted to take over from Van Gaal, with an announcement expected in the coming days.
The £5m payout isn't quite as pretty as what Mourinho himself received when he was sacked from Chelsea in December, with the 'Special One' receiving £12m upon his dismissal from Stamford Bridge.
On the whole, despite a number of "?calamitous and "?hilarious moments from Man Utd's sacked manager, Van Gaal's tenure was tainted with fan frustration as a result of the Dutchman's conservative style of football.

Van Gaal spent £250m on players during his two-year spell, with the likes of Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay drafted in to bolster United's attack.

"?However, The Red Devils managed to score just 49 league goals this season - their worst total since the formation of the Premier League in 1992.
This, as well as rumours about "?dressing room unrest, ultimately cost Van Gaal his job, meaning that the Dutchman will head home with an FA Cup trophy under his belt and a £5m payout. Not a bad turnaround considering the media 'sacked' Van Gaal months ago.
