It is understood that the Everton hierarchy have been impressed with what the 53-year-old has achieved with the Saints since arriving in 2014 on the back of the summer exodus which saw some of Southampton's biggest stars like Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw leave the club.

But Southampton defender Virgil van Djik has suggested for the Toffees to look elsewhere, saying, "I think he has done an amazing job so far. Hopefully we can do it next year as well and then it is about him and the club and what he wants to do."
"If we do well then we are going to progress then hopefully do better than we do this year and i am very confident he will stay."
