Romelu Lukaku Claims Roberto Martinez Lost the Everton Dressing Room

Published on: 22 May 2016

"?Romelu Lukaku has today claimed that former Everton manager Roberto Martinez lost the dressing room during the final months of the season, which contributed to the Spanish manager's downfall.

Speaking to "?Sky Sports, the Belgian said, "The team did not perform at all. We won two of our last 11 games. When things are broken between the manager and the players, it become difficult".

Martinez was sacked by the Toffees following a disastrous run which saw them pick up just four points from early March until the"? 3-0 defeat at Sunderland, which proved to be the final nail in the coffin for the former Swansea and Wigan boss.

"?Everton managed to reach the semi-finals of both cups, but a dismal showing in the league saw them finish in eleventh place.

Martinez had been in charge since 2013, when long serving manager David Moyes left to join Manchester United. Joining from Wigan Athletic, he won the FA Cup in his final season at the DW Stadium but saw the club relegated the following week, which meant that the jury was out on the Spaniard right from the start.

A fifth-place spot in his first season went a long way to appeasing the doubters, but finishing eleventh the following time around led to murmurs of discontent amongst fans, and the poor end to this season was the final straw for the Goodison hierarchy.

Speculation has been rife since Martinez's sacking over who will take over at Goodison Park, with Manuel Pelligrini, Frank de Boer and Ronald Koeman all being mentioned, but it looks as though Lukaku himself will not be part of the squad, whoever ends up in the manager's dugout.

Despite his father's insistence that his future would be decided prior to Euro 2016, the Belgian frontman hasn't given anything away, saying only: "In my head I know where I want to go, but I'm keeping that to myself. You will know when it is concluded. I have to make a good choice but in my head that has happened already".

The former Chelsea player added, "Wherever I go, I want to win prizes. During Leicester's title ceremony, I was standing just 10 metres from the trophy. I just stared at it for two minutes, forgetting to get on with the warm-up. I thought to myself, I want that".
