The 26-year-old's 10 goals in 33 appearances in a fantastic season for the Giallorossi warranted the big money move, with the Bosnian signing a five-year deal for the Serie A champions. De Rossi has sung his praises of his former team-mate calling him "an exemplary team mate from the very first day that he arrived at Roma."

Speaking after an exemplary performance of his own in Italy's 2-0 Euro 2016 victory over Belgium on Monday evening, De Rossi said "he always trained at 100 per cent. I wish him good luck."

The pair spent nearly five years together in the centre of Roma's midfield, finishing the 2015/16 season in third place behind Pjanic's new team Juventus and second place Napoli. De Rossi is sad to see his partner leaving stating that "I'm sorry that he's joining our strongest rivals, but football is like this."

The talismanic Italian was still able to see the funny side of Pjanic's departure insisting that "on a football level, I hope he does not win the league" as De Rossi goes in search of his first Scudetto with Roma last winning the Italian title in 2001.
