Roberto Di Matteo and Steve Clarke Expected to Team Up at Aston Villa

Published on: 01 June 2016

Roberto Di Matteo will be named Aston Villa manager on Friday and could be set to bring in Steve Clarke as his assistant, according to  Sky Sports.

Di Matteo is said to have been top of Villa's wishlist for the past month ever since the club was taken over by Dr Tony Jiantong Xia.

The Aston Villa job will make a big change for Di Matteo who will have gone from competing in the Champions League with Chelsea to managing in the Championship with Villa in under five years.

Since his departure from Chelsea back in 2012, the Italian has gone on to have a short stint in Germany with Schalke which came to an end just over a year ago.

Should Di Matteo bring in Steve Clarke as his assistant it will be the first time the two will have worked alongside each other in a managerial setup.

However, the two have both spent time at West Brom and Chelsea during their coaching careers thus far.

Clarke has been out of work since he was sacked as Reading manager last December and is likely to be thrilled at getting another challenge.

Di Matteo and Clarke could work well for Aston Villa with both men having plenty of experience in the English second tier.

Di Matteo previously brought West Brom back to the Premier league from the Championship while Clarke himself brought the Baggies to their highest ever Premier League finish back in 2013.

Clarke has also had spells as an assistant at Newcastle, Chelsea, West Ham and Liverpool, making him an ideal candidate for the job.
