"?Premier League pundit Robbie Savage has set Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp a substantial target for his first full season in charge at Anfield in 2016/17, insisting the German must make the Reds challenge for the title.
"Two finals in your first seven months in charge at Anfield can't be bad, and with no European football as a distraction next season, Klopp has laid the foundations for a title challenge," Savage suggested in a column for the Daily Mirror.
However, he did warn that Kenny Dalglish also guided the Reds to two finals in 2012 - the League Cup and the FA Cup - but proceeded to finish eighth in the Premier League to match Klopp's record. The club legend actually won the first of those two finals as well.
Also reminding people that Dalglish was sacked after that campaign, Savage continued, "Before trolls rush to their keyboards, in no way am I suggesting that Klopp will be there for anything but the long haul.
"His target for the 2016-17 campaign should, however, be set in stone already: A top-four finish, bringing a return of Champions League football to Anfield. So far, he has given fans every reason to believe he can deliver it."
For ex-Liverpool striker Neil Mellor there need to be personnel changes in the playing squad this summer, with the 33-year-old pointing to the mistakes that were made in the Europa League final and a lack of consistency that is holding the Reds back.
"If we can get that, there's no reason why we can't challenge for a minimum of a top four finish next season. We've no distractions in terms of European football, so it's about us and what we do," Mellor wrote in a Liverpool Echo column.
"We need to address the defensive issues that have followed us for too long. I think we need to look at a left back and a goalkeeper, and there are questions over the centre of midfield too. Like I say, there have been enough positive moments this season to give us hope for next term."
