"?The first monthly awards of the season have been handed out, and it is Raheem Sterling and Mike Phelan who have impressed the most and won the Player and Manager of the Month awards for August respectively.

Manchester City star Sterling has "?won the award for the first time after a month that saw him contribute two goals and one assist to Manchester City's quest to win silverware this season.

The English winger was picked ahead of Chelsea's Eden Hazard, Manchester United's Antonio Valencia and Hull City's Curtis Davies.

"I'm absolutely delighted to have won the EA Sports Premier League Player of the Month Award for August," said Sterling. "As a club we've had a fantastic start to the Premier League season and to be recognised individually in this way is very pleasing."

The manager of the month award went the way of Hull City's Phelan, topping a shortlist that included Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

Phelan led the club through a turbulent time after previous manager Steve Bruce left the club in the summer, and managed to secure victories over Leicester City and Swansea, before finishing the month with a stoppage time loss to Man Utd.

This is the "?first award that Phelan has won, and he is only the second ever Hull manager to win it. Phil Brown was named Manager of the Month for September 2008.

"I am honoured," Phelan said. "It's an honour you don't expect, being caretaker manager. It's a credit to the football club and to the players for all their endeavours that have given me this achievement."
