Portuguese Defender Raphael Guerreiro Set for Borussia Dortmund Move

Published on: 14 June 2016

Portugal left-back Raphael Guerreiro"? is close to becoming a Borussia Dortmund player, according to "?L'Equipe.

The report states that he will sign for the German club on Wednesday, in Paris, as he is involved in the Euro 2016 tournament being hosted in the country.

He will sign a four-year contract for a transfer fee of €12m, which includes a 20% sell-on clause for French club FC Lorient

After being born in France, he chose to represent Portugal in 2014 and was called up to the first-team squad - despite speaking very little of the language.

The 22-year-old has improved his all-round game to become first choice left-back for his national side after Fabio Coentrao's injury ruled him out of the tournament.

Portugal opened their Euro 2016 campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw with Iceland, who were playing their first ever game at a major tournament. Guerreiro was one of the few bright sparks for the Iberian side, in a game where star-man Cristiano Ronaldo missed numerous chances to put the game out of reach.

90 minutes
94 touches
4 key passes
1 shot on target
1 dribble
2/3 tackles
2 interceptions
88% pass completion

The two clubs are joined in Group F by Austria and Hungary, with only the first and second-placed sides guaranteed progress to the Round of 16.

The transfer to the Bundesliga will continue Dortmund's recent strategy of investing in youth. This policy has come to fruition in recent years with players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Robert Lewandowski and Marco Reus all graduating to the first-team.

This has also become a stable financial model, with players such as Mario Gotze, Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan all being sold for big transfer fees.
