Payet Reveals Immense Free-Kick Pressure After Yet Another Wonderstrike

Published on: 30 May 2016

"?West Ham and France midfielder Dimitri Payet has downplayed the expectations on his free kick-taking prowess, although he admitted that many fans may now expect him to score every time he stands over a dead ball.

The French international scored from yet another direct free-kick for France on Monday night, a beautiful curling shot in the last minute of the game to snatch a 3-2 win for Les Blues over a spirited Cameroon side.

Payet told "?L'Equipe after the game: "When you score one, then two, then three, the crowd expect that you score every time. That doesn't always happen, even though it worked again tonight."

He added: "I don't know if my goal rescued us but it allowed us to win when their second goal had been a bit contentious. It was special for me to come back here to this stadium, where I spent two beautiful seasons. And I was happy to feel the fans get behind us."

Payet is expected to be named in France's 23-man squad for Euro 2016 on Tuesday afternoon, and could well play a significant part in one of the most intimidating attacking units in world football - with strength in depth to the point that the West Ham man looks likely to start from the bench.

"?Speaking to L'Equipe just days ago about his free kicks, Payet revealed that he has not worked on his free kick technique for some time, saying: "No, I have worked in the early season until I scored my first for West Ham. When I scored the first, I found my way to shoot. So, I do not make adjustments."
